The Legal Services Corporation.
The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the single largest funder of civil legal aid in the United States. Ohio's legal aid system braids LSC's federal funding together with the Foundation's state-level support.
The national funder
Established by Congress, the Legal Services Corporation is a nonprofit that distributes federal funding for civil legal aid to grantees across every U.S. state and territory. Several of Ohio's legal aid organizations receive LSC funding, subject to LSC's regulations and priorities.
How it fits with the Foundation
The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation is, in effect, the state-level counterpart to LSC — a funder rather than a direct provider. Where LSC brings federal dollars, the Foundation adds IOLTA/IOTA interest, the civil filing-fee surcharge, grants, and private gifts, leveraging more than two private and alternative dollars for every federal dollar. Together, these sources sustain the five legal aid organizations → that serve all 88 Ohio counties.
